This happened to me also one time make sure that there isn't any GD files in /usr/lib
/usr/include as well as in /usr/local/lib /usr/local/include assuming your running linux that is!
Then recompile/install GD and run ldconfig, if there still are problems try passing
--with-gd=/usr/local or what ever prefix you used when you installed GD.
I think this is how I solved it.
If you get really fustrated there is always the --without-gd option :-)
