When designing a data model, always use generated primary keys
(AUTO_INCREMENT). That way, the user won't be able to change them and
you won't have to do several updates to the related tables.
If you need a field that cannot have duplicate values, Mysql 3.23 and
later support the "UNIQUE" keyword.
