mcrypt MODE (CBC, CFB, OFB, etc) mis-understanding

I understand that I probably just don't understand enough about
crypto, but can someone explain why when using the php mcrypt()
functions (with blowfish, or tripledes) only MODE ECB decrypts the
data back into it's original form. When I try any of the other modes
(CBC, CFB, OFB, nOFB, STREAM), the sum (or md5sum rather) of the
decrypted data is different from my input. I would expect it to be
the same.
What am I missing?
