Try the functions urlencode() and urldecode(). See php manual for details.

Subject: [PHP-GENERAL] Spaces in Parameters
Security Level:? Internal
Greetings,
I am having a little trouble with Netscape.
There are some parameters that I am passing in a url to use later in
a script. These parameters may or may not have spaces in them.
IE automatically replaces the spaces with %20 to make the parameter
work, however Netscape does not do this.
So in IE it looks like member%20name and works correctly
while NN passed member name and it does not work
Now this is data drawn from a database.
How can I make it so that data drawn from the database when it is
passed to the url automatically adds the %20 so it will work in NN.
Thanks
