HI Abe,
Broadvision, Vignette etc are Content Management Systems, and it is
incorrect to compare them to PHP. PHP is a language, like Java (which most
of these expensive systems are written in). BV, Vignette etc would be
comparable to Zope (www.zope.com), eGrail (www.egrail.com) etc.
Most of the latter are very new, and much more reasonable in their pricing,
but if you ask me, they are just about as extendible and powerful as any of
their over-priced counterparts.
Of course, neither of the above, including BV and Vignette, are free from
headaches. Both have very proprietary APIs if you wish to add anything to
their pre-packaged functionality.
As in the case of the company that I work for, sometimes the reasons that
you go for one product or another are not really technology based (in which
case, I would think that anything based on PHP would easily win, IMHO
because it would be REALLY easy to maintain and would be CONSIDERABLY faster
than anything even touched by Java), but necessitated by "business
realities" (Java = more money can be charged etc).
BTW, you might like to check the following two opinionated links:
- Broadvision

- Vignette:
http://philip.greenspun.com/wtr/vignette-old
(and a new copy of this document:
http://philip.greenspun.com/wtr/vignette.html)
Hope this helps,

| Hey there,
|
| I am a PHP developer but like to keep up with technology that
| is around -
| Our clients in general are tending to be bigger as the company
| gets bigger -
|
| Should we be looking at Broadvision and such products as
| opposed to PHP in
| the long term for larger projects- Does anyone have experience of these
| products and PHP and do they offer greater advantages such as better
| development time (although PHP is fast to write) or more stable or
| something?
|
| At the moment they seem kinda unnecessary and expensive - but we need to
| plan our strategy and technology ahead...
|
| Thamks,
| Abe
