problems reading directory entries longer 13 characters

I use the following code to read a directory:

$d = dir("/tmp/php");
echo "Handle: ".$d->handle."<br>\n";
echo "Path: ".$d->path."<br>\n";
while($entry=$d->read()) {
echo $entry."<br>\n";
}
$d->close();
?>
Here is the result:
Handle: Resource id #1
Path: /tmp/php
.
.
12345678901234 ÿ ? ?0
123456789
It seems that php4 has a problem with filenames longer than 13 characters.
Php3 works well. Any ideas ?
