Upgrading question

I'd like to install the latest update to PHP4. I'm currently running 4.0.2 on a Yellow Dog Linux server. The server is running in a production environment, so downtime isn't something I want.
I'm kind of a newbie at installing Linux software. Is it as simple as unpacking/configuring/making the new version, or do I have to recompile Apache, etc.??
