sorry, I just worked it out, in case anyone's interested, the problem is not specifying a From attribute in the mail header, so correct code should be: $errormesg=mail($mail_address, $mail_subject, "subscribe " . $mail_list . " " . $mail_reply_address, "From: " . $mail_reply_address); thanks Andrew -----Original Message----- From: Andrew McRobert [mailto:mcrobert@central.murdoch.edu.au] Sent: Friday, June 23, 2000 12:50 PM To: Php-List (E-mail) Subject: [PHP-GENERAL] quick qstn - mail function hi I just have a quick question (i hope). I'm trying to set up a mailing list subscription page. I'm using the following variables: $mail_address -> where to send the subcription request (ie. majordomo@my.domain.com) $mail_subject $mail_list -> the name of the mailing list $mail_reply_address -> the address of the person seeking to be subcribed ... I've echoed the variables through the action page and everything comes through fine. I'm trying to use the mail() function to send the subcription request to majordomo (which also seems to be formed correctly), the code is: $errormesg=mail($mail_address, $mail_subject, "subscribe " . $mail_list . " " . $mail_reply_address); ... but I'm getting the following message back from majordomo: "MAJORDOMO ABORT (mj_majordomo)!! majordomo@apipli.murdoch.edu.au : www-data <apache> is not a valid return address." .... any ideas would be greatly appreciated. tks Andrew ------------------------------------------------- Andrew McRobert LLB B.Sc(Comp.
