Oh! For a moment I thought tedd had let me down - it didn't quite work properly: the faded-out image flashed up again before being replaced by the new image. So I looked at the code and realised that the new image was a background image, which was being copied up to the foreground... and I had caching disabled (I was on my development system and hacking some annoying IE/JS problems) so the copying-up was forcing a reload from source...
