What do you mean "Preemptive" ? Header("WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm='$SERVER_NAME' "); Header("HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized"); is this what you want? Ive heard of problems with IE / Netscape here. some say IE might want the order of those header()'s to be flipped. are the variables your looking for called ? $PHP_AUTH_PW $PHP_AUTH_USER those will contain the contents of the pop-up login screen.
