preg_replace( "/go/", "###", $str );
The "replacement" string is not delimited by "/".
Also... if you want to do something like perl's "/go(.*)/don't go\1/" use
preg_replace( "/go(.*)/", "don't go \\1", $str ); # Notice the double \\
