I'm not sure if I'm right but you can always try this.
Instead of having the form. use a group for all users.
Have a directory like /login/ allow the htaccess to try to authenticate when
they pass authentication the script that runs at /login/ will determine from
the $REMOTE_USER where to redirect the user to for their own directory.
Now, I think that the browser will simply try to authenticate the user again
off of what what previously entered. since it will match their personal
directory user and pass then they won't be prompted a second time.
