If you're willing to use frames, you can put the table part in a separate
frame, then reload that frame only, leaving the rest of the window
undisturbed.
If you're not up for frames, then it depends on the target browsers in your
user population. If you're designing for the web at large, you pretty much
can't do it, because there are too many browsers out there that don't
support what you're trying to do.
However, if you can limit your target browsers to those supporting
layers/DHTML, you can implement the table as a layer, display the first
result set, then change it's visibility to off, reorder it, set the
visibility back to on, and so on. I'm pretty sure this is available in
Netscape 4.0 and above (with the caveat that there's a bug such that if you
draw a layer above a form, the form fields get drawn on top anyway, no
matter what) as well as in Internet Explorer 4.0 and above. DHTML is not a
short learning curve because it's different in each browser and the
documentation was, in my experience, both incomplete and misleading. YMMV.
You could also implement as a Java applet, but that's a whole other set of
considerations.
Hope that helps.
