      Looks like a case of: "It's not if, but when".  Someday, some will have to do it.

Compare the situation with some other product. The customer should not expect the designer to provide free maintenance forever. Have they paid you a yearly maintenance fee? Also, things have changed regarding register_globals. They became a major security risk because hackers learned how to exploit them, since you designed the code.
