Yes, thank God, i'm not insane :)
They don't work at my box either. I saw your bug report at
bugs.php.net and i have exactly the same experience, except that my
box is Debian potato/frozen.
4.0rc2 has the problem.
4.0b4pl1 is OK, but it also doesn't compile cleanly with pdflib 3 :-(
4.0rc1 looks OK (i've only looked at it for 5 minutes).
So, if you can, downgrade to rc1.
