Having developed a big site in ASP and then migrated it to PHP I can tell
you a good reason...
PHP can run in something different than Windows.
Windows sucks at stability... we could not find a way to make our servers
run smoothly... all the help we could got from Microsoft involved disabling
ASP features that would render it useless (like, disabling sessions). Our
"final" solution took advantage of the fact that we were using transparent
load balancing across 5 servers... we simply reset each server every 30
minutes.
ASP is a "nice" language... PHP is a "great" languange... the list is too
long to cover (regexps, imap, pdf, images, classes, the dev team, its open
source nature).
Regards,
Sebastian
PS: By "big site" I mean more than 50.000 lines of PHP code serving more
than 2.5 million pageviews daily.
