Cookies and username/passwords

Hi all, I want to use cookies to check if a user has been to the site
before, and if so, his login ID is entered for him and he only needs to
enter his password. However, in the case that more than one person has
come to the site before from the same machine, I want there to be a
drop-down menu for the login ID if any of those users returns. Can
anyone help explain or point me in the direction of how to do this? I am
a total cookie newbie.
