We develop on both at the company where I work and the only major
differences are (so far that I've noticed):
Mail - On unix/linux php uses sendmail so it appears more "built-in"
than on windows where you have to either use an external com object or
some other program or an external smtp server. We use a com object for
mailing things from php on winnt and it works splendidly.
COM objects - if you've worked with vb or asp on windows and IIS using
com objects you'll love php's support. apart from syntax the same
functions are available as in vb and asp. It's actually, though I
hesitate to say it as a Unix geek, rather nice to have the option of
having COM when working on NT. I'm only just learning it, but I'm really
enjoying it.
That's mainly it, other than the inherent advantages in stability and
speed gained from a unix platform. I'm only using windows at work as a
migration path away from our site which is currently completely built on
ASP and IIS over to PHP and Apache. I'll be writing a paper for
linux.com on the experience as I go. Should be a lot of fun. If anyone's
interested I can keep the entire list up-to-date as to when there are
new installments.
Hope this helps!!
