And got this code below going, but I'll bet I need a bit more - like adding
authentication - smtp - port - sending user / pass etc.
Any hints how to get this to the next level?

As others have said, it is convenient to use a library/framework to send mails from your PHP script via SMTP with authentication.
You might also want to check out Zend_Mail component of Zend Framework.
