I have recently been told that we are switching from compiling Apache, PHP and PostgreSQL ourselves to only using the official RedHat RPMs on our production servers[*].*snip*
[*] No, I don't like this at all. I see it as the antithesis of both the Open Source and Free Software philosophies. It means we give up control of some of the options we were selecting at compile time and have to settle for somebody else's idea of the perfect server. I fully expect it will come back to bite us at some point. It's probably a paid support issue. If they are going with RHEL instead of a free distribution, they probably are doing so for the support RHEL offers. As soon as you modify the applications, Red Hat understandably refuses to support the modified applications, thus neutering the point of using RHEL.
