auto_prepend does that, but it's been around longer than just PHP 4...

Yes, no, sort of....
Zend will be offering commercial, proprietary (not free) products to:
A) Cache oft-used scripts in the web-server's memory.
B) Encode (read: compile) PHP code into distributable loadable binary files
to protect intellectual property. It will probably not appreciably increase
performance, however.
