Non-blocking functions

Is it possible in PHP to call a function and have it return immediately so that the rest of the code can be evaluated? I'd like to perform some possibly lengthy network routines that aren't critical to the display of the page each time a page is loaded, but I don't want to hold up everything to do it. Thanks. - John
