SMTP AUTH?

Hello!
I would like to send out mails via a PHP script. The mails I send out
should can not be send through a local sendmail, so I cannot use mail().
The server I want to use to send the mails requires me to do SMTP AUTH
before I mail the messages.
My problem is, I don't know anything about SMTP AUTH. How do I do that? Or
much better: Did someone else already do that?
