PHP3 with IBM DB2 V6.1 SuSE Linux 6.1 Memory Problem with odbc_connect()?

I am trying to setup PHP3 (3.0.16) to access IBM DB2 V6.1 on a SuSE 6.1
linux system. I have build PHP both as a CGI program and
as a apache module using:
./configure \
--with-ibm-db2=/home/db2adm/sqllib
When I try to issue an odbc_connect() such as:
odbc_connect("DEVELOP","db2adm"db2dba")
I get following:
Warning: SQL error: J~^@ f?@èL±?@¹BA@ºÄ?@üv@, SQL state
in SQLConnect in /usr/local/apache/htdocs/testDB2.php3 on line

This occurs with apache module and cgi program.
The problem duplicates on a SuSE 6.2 system and with
DB2 FixPack 1 installed or with DB2 stopped!
Any ideas on what is going on here?
