error/warning messages

does anybody know how to change error/warning message?
in my case it's timeout error message. after set amount of time the script
is terminated and standard debug message is sent to the browser. I'd like to
change it so it's more user friendly and informative..
I'm running PHP 4.03pl, Apache on sparc Solaris 2.6
I will appreciate every idea
