file permissions

Hi,
I am using php to copy files from one location to another within a website
using the copy command, my problem is with the persmissions that these file
are given once they are copied they are given a UID as 'nobody', i have
tried setting the directory permissions to 777 but no effect. When I come
to ftp into the website I cannot remove or overwrite these files, but I can
through PHP.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
