Completely dependent on the database as far as speed goes. On some database servers opening
connections is painfully slow and they'll see little benefit. On others (e.g. MySQL),
there's not
going to be much of a noticeable difference.
Since persistent connections are based on the database host, username and password, there
shouldn't
be any security implications.
