Actually, the way I understood it, the compiler itself is Zend engine.
- Zend engine compiles PHP code and converts into an internal bytecode
representation.
- The optimizer module rearranges the compiled code to execute faster.
- The cache module stores the code in a shared memory storage to be loaded
by any of the server processes.
- What is called a compiler is actually a module that saves the compiled
code to the disk to be loaded from there later if it is not in the shared
memory cache.
So, this won't actually speedup the execution if you have the cache module.
The compiler module is aimed at people that want to distribute closed
source PHP scripts and eventually make money from selling them. This is
why is perfectly fair for Zend to charge for the compiler module.
