It also depends on who you are using as your SMS gateway. I have a project that I use TCS as my gateway and they gave me a pretty simple socket based API for talking to their servers that I managed to write a PHP class around (using fsockopen and friends). So now I just do
$sms = new SMS;
$sms->connect($login,$password);
$sms->sendMessage($phonenumber,$message);
if ($sms->error()) {
echo "SMS Error: ".$sms->error();
}
$sms->disconnect();
