addslashes problem

im having problems with the addslashes function. i use a form to update a
mysql database and use the addslashes because there can be various
characters i need to escape in order for it to properly go in to the mysql
database
what i end up with is something like this
werd wer\\\'d weerrr\\\'ed
so it goes in to the database as
werd wer\'d weerrr\'ed
this is obviously not what im looking to do.
any help?
