PHP sessions & headers.

I'm wondering how I can test for the existence of a particular session id before actually calling session_start().
Ultimately I'd like to check if the session id is valid one, if it is then session_start(), otherwise header("loginpage.php").
Because session_start() I believe attempts to send a cookie header, all headers after this point are defunct, correct?
