RTFM - MySQL Language Reference, Chapter 7, somewhere around pp197 and experiment at the command line. Don't know how well it handles "select birthdate, lastname, firstname ... sort by birthdate ascending, lastname descending, firstname descending" This is terse, but there's a wealth of information in the manual, and as it's a PDF you can easily search it.
