the newer GD's (1.8 and up) don't support gif anymore, due to the
stoopid licensing policy (how many of you know to and pay $5000
to Unisys for having a couple of .gifs on your homepage?)

actually, nope :( GD's PNG support is a lousy hack from gif
support and hence supports only 256 colours too (although the
format allows much more).
