Registering session variables with php4

Hello,
I'm trying to reuse a variable I once registered in the same browser section but it doesn't seem to work.
When I register, it seems that the file in /tmp only holds the name -of the variable I tried to register, even though I've set a value for that var and then registered it.
Any clues?
