You are missing a \ and/or a " in there... It will work if you print it
correctly.
Or, you can jump out of PHP "mode":
<?php
print "whatever";
?>
<embed ...>
<?php
print "more php stuff.";
?>

PHP just spews the HTML (or GIF or whatever you have it doing) out to the
browser.

Yes, if your PHP program spits the wrong thing to the browser, the browser
will not correctly display it.
In this case, some PHP scripts are spewing NULL characters to the browser,
and the browsers don't like it. Don't do that.
