html error reporting

howdy all.
somewhat new php programmer here, so don't be too harsh if this is a
stupid question ;-)
is there a way to turn off php reporting errors with html formatting in
them? i am building a couple of non-web server scripts, and i would love
to be able to have it return things like parse errors and such as part of
the normal output still, but not have the <b></b> etc tags among the error
messages.
