Require doesn't return the contents of the file. In fact, it doesn't return
anything. So setting a variable equal to require is going to leave the
variable empty (actually, the manual says you should get a parse error...
don't know why you're not, unless I'm misinterpretting).
Try uncommenting the print $werd; line, it should get rid of the 0.
