A simple reusable function and pass-through variable is one method:
<?php
session_start();
$_SESSION['first_name'] = $first_name =
thisorthat(@$_POST['first_name'],null);
function thisorthat($a,$b) {
return isset($a) ? $a : $b;
}
?>
