Bad column offset weirdness

I am just seeing the most bizarre behaviour on the part of the PHP 4 parser:
pg_result($result,0,$i) ($i happens to be exactly 1)
gives: 'Warning: Bad column offset specified . . . '
whereas
pg_result($result,0,(0+$i)) works and gives the same result as
pg_result($result,0,1)
can anyone explain that?
