I've seen where some people will keep the images outside of the webroot.
Then use file functions and the appropriate headers to display the image on
the page. Note that this doesn't stop them from doing a screenshot or maybe
not even right-click-save-as, but it'll stop people from linking to your
images and stealing your bandwidth.
Don't know if that helps or not... :)
