I've written a utility (more at
http://www.terracottasoftware.com/packageinfo/utilach.html
)
which may be of interest to PHP developers doing ecommerce
applications. It is an interface to the NACHA file format,
which is used by the Automated Clearing House banking
system to do electronic funds transfers. ACH is a fast, cheap
way to do electronic payments (better than credit cards).
If you are interested, the utility is packaged with the Terra
Cotta system ( http://www.terracottasoftware.com )
but
also works standalone. There are two scripts: a full ACH
interface and a simplified API script which provides a
reduced and hopefully easier to use interface to the format.
The scripts have been tested on live ACH transactions with
Citizens' Bank, so I know they work there, but they may need
a little tweaking depending on the weirdnesses that other
banks impose.
Also, there is documentation
( http://www.terracottasoftware.com/tc/doc/ach.html
)
which describes the NACHA file format in detail. Some of
the information in the official documentation appears to be
incorrect, as discovered through iterative testing (grrrrr) but
the docs and code comments should leave a trail regarding
that.
The scripts are under GPL, as is the whole Terra Cotta
system.

As far as I can tell, this is the only ACH utility in any language
available under any open source license on the web.
