this is a fairly complex example, but here's some stuff to do: first, rpm -qa |grep apa find the name of your apache rpm, and remove every last trace of it. then, get all the tars into one dir... untar everything, so you have directories like apache_1.3.14/ php-4.0.4/ mysql-3.23.29a-gamma/ all in the same place then, some commands: build mysql first: cd mysql-3.23.29a-gamma/ groupadd mysql useradd -g mysql mysql ./configure --with-named-curses-libs=/usr/lib/libncurses.so --without-bench make make install cd support-files/ cp mysql.server /etc/rc.d/init.d/ chkconfig --level 345 mysql.server on cd ../ /usr/local/bin/mysql_install_db /usr/local/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'WHATEVER' I manually find libncurses.so and tell mysql where it is. I hate getting compile errors about ncurses :P ok, assuming that went well... cd ../apache_1.3.14 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache cd ../php-4.0.4/ ./configure \ --prefix=/usr/local/php4 \ --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/apache/conf \ --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14 \ --enable-ftp \ --with-zlib=/usr/ \ --enable-bcmath \ --enable-calendar \ --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib \ --with-tiff-dir=/usr/lib \ --with-openssl \ --with-mhash=/usr/local/mhash \ --with-mcrypt=/usr/bin/mcrypt \ --enable-debug=no \ --with-mysql=/usr/local \ make make install obviously trim that to suit your needs... I'm an everything-but-the kitchen sink kinda guy. cd ../apache_1.3.14 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a make make install cd /usr/local/apache/bin/ manually edit apachectl, add # Comments to support chkconfig on RedHat Linux # chkconfig: 345 90 16 # description: apache cp apachectl /etc/rc.d/init.d/ /sbin/chkconfig --level 345 apachectl on you might have to do /sbin/chkconfig --add apachectl first, can't remember restart there will be a few things wrong, there almost always are... luckily they are usually fairly obvious and easy to fix... _a -- Alex Black, Head Monkey enigma@turingstudio.com The Turing Studio, Inc. http://www.turingstudio.com vox+510.666.0074 fax+510.666.0093 Saul Zaentz Film Center 2600 Tenth St Suite 433 Berkeley, CA 94710-2522 > From: marcus@webpagescanada.com ("Marcus Ouimet") > Newsgroups: php.general > Date: 4 Jan 2001 17:24:56 -0800 > Subject: [PHP] Apache > > This is probably the wrong mailing list but in the end I guess I'll end up > here. I have given up on thinking of installing an RPM version of PHP. So I > thought I would download the source for MySQL, Apache, and PHP. And then build > them. Well I started with Apache (I already have a running copy but I have no > idea how it was installed as I did not do it - it was oh my god... cihost, > anyways :-) I went through and unzipped it then use the tar xvf command. So it > was in an uncompressed directory. Then I ran: > > ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache > make > make install > > Great it installed apache and I checked over the new httpd.conf file and it > seemed to have all the correct information in it. Then I tried to stop apache > using apachectl stop but realized the only copy of it was the new one > installed, so I ran it from there, and it said nothing was running so I ran > apachectl start from the newly installed version and guess what the old > version is still running. So for the hell of it I tried httpd.restart and > httpd.reload - still no luck.
