Thanks to everyone who replied. Adding the .htm and .html extensions to the AddType line for x-httpd-php did the trick. It's working now. This would be a good thing to add to the INSTALL file that comes with PHP 4.0.4 and also the online PHP FAQ. They both mention the AddType line but only suggest the PHP-specific extensions like .php and .php3. I guess it's obvious now, but for a first-time Linux/Apache/PHP installer it sure had me going for a while. The annotated online PHP manual at www.php.net/manual/introduction.php has a comment by jwatt@email.unc.edu saying you need to have 2 lines: AddType text/html .html AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html but I found this did not work. After adding the first line for the text/html MIME type, I got a parse error from PHP for the first line of index.html. If I take out the first AddType line so there is no explicit extension mapping for text/html, it all works. Very strange! Well, what the heck, it's working. Thanks everyone!
