Class trouble...

I'm trying to get the following script to work and am not having much luck.
I'm expecting to end up with a two level array printed out at the end, eg:
test children 2
* x00 children 1
x01 children 0
* x10 children 1
x11 children 0
...
But it looks like x00's child gets added, but then immediately deleted?
I have all of the objects returned as references, but is there a copy being
made somewhere that I'm not catching?
