[PHP4.0.0] Authorization by Apache does not work

Hello all :) I hope, I am right here on this list. Well, I downloaded PHP 4.0.0 today, compiled it as an apache module (libphp4.so) and it works :) But...I changed the server config file that .html can include PHP-Code, too. So this runs pretty good, but if I put a working .htaccess-file into my directory, the server always answers that Authorization failed without showing the requester for entering login and password. It worked with PHP 3.0.7 really good. I use Apache 1.3.4 on a Linux 2.0.36 server. Did I forget a configure option?
