Tried that, and it doesn't work. The only thing that works is to page
back up until I see syntax highlighted text again, and then scroll
down 1 line at a time.

What mode should I use to get syntax highlighting ? I haven't found a
good mode that does syntax highlighting and treats tabs and
autoindentation in a semi sane session.
