yeah you can do that, don't know about other phones, but for nokia you need the cable, a phone with the appropriate plugs (ie a 5xx0 / 6xx0 / 7xx0 / 9xx0 model phone, not a 8xx0 or 3xx0 model), and the nokia data suite or free alternative if they exist for your operating system.
