It's not that way by default so my guess is it's not in.
If you do the phpinfo, and the third row at the top is: Configure Command
In there if you see --enable-trans-sid
Then it's compiled with that support.
Also, if you simply enable the session, it shows up in the URL
automatically. It's not really transparent, this option just automatically
puts it in the URL for you.
But on linux compiled versions, enable-trans-sid has a bug which is being
fixed in php 4.0.1
