Another potentially viable alternative would be to use PHP's ftp functions, if you compiled them in, but you'd only see directories the FTP username you provided has access to. Other than that, maybe somehow mounting the remote directories locally vis NSF or, um, Samba?, or, err, I dunno what them other things are that do stuff like that.
