Suggest maybe looking at Macromedia Director/Shockwave. I haven't tried this on the web, but you may be able to create a Shockwave movie with a placeholder Quicktime on the stage and dynamically link the actual movie that you want at runtime. Your preview page with a still image will actually be a page with a Shockwave embedded in it showing the first frame of the movie paused. No guarantees that this will work, but I hope this helps and/or prompts other ideas.
